Welcome to Week 1 of MAT137 - Intermediate Algebra!
Hello everyone! I'm excited to have you in MAT137 this semester. Each week, I'll be posting class notes and quizzes right here to make sure you have easy access to all the materials you need. Whether you need a quick refresher or missed a class, this page has you covered. This week, we covered two important topics: Functions and Basic Trigonometry.
Key Concepts Covered This Week:
- Functions: We reviewed the definition of a function, its domain and range, and different ways to represent functions (equations, graphs, tables). Remember, a function is a relation where each input has exactly one output. We discussed function notation, where $f(x)$ represents the output of the function $f$ when the input is $x$.
- Basic Trigonometry: We introduced the trigonometric functions (sine, cosine, tangent) and their relationships to the unit circle. A key concept is understanding angles in both degrees and radians. We also covered the definitions of sine, cosine, and tangent in terms of the sides of a right triangle: $$sin(\theta) = \frac{opposite}{hypotenuse}, cos(\theta) = \frac{adjacent}{hypotenuse}, tan(\theta) = \frac{opposite}{adjacent}$$. We also looked at solving basic trigonometric equations.
Important Resources:
Below you'll find links to the resources we used this week. Please review these materials carefully to solidify your understanding of the concepts we covered.
- Class Notes (11-01-21): Intro Trig 1-6 and 2-3 (These notes cover the introduction to trigonometry that we discussed in class. Be sure to review the examples and practice problems.)
- Trigonometry Worksheet: Trigonometry Worksheet (This worksheet provides additional practice problems to help you master the concepts of basic trigonometry. Work through these problems and check your answers.)
- Class Syllabus: MAT137 Syllabus (Please familiarize yourself with the course syllabus, which outlines the course policies, grading criteria, and schedule.)
- Week 1 Quiz: Quiz Link (Make sure to complete the Week 1 Quiz by the deadline. This quiz will assess your understanding of the material covered this week.)
Additional Tips for Success:
- Practice, practice, practice! The best way to learn math is to work through problems. Don't just read the notes; actively solve the examples and try the practice problems.
- Ask questions! If you're struggling with a concept, don't hesitate to ask questions in class, during office hours, or on the discussion forum.
- Form a study group! Working with other students can be a great way to learn and stay motivated.
I'm looking forward to a great semester! Remember to keep up with the material, ask questions when needed, and engage with your classmates. Good luck with Week 1!
