Welcome to Summer 2024!

I am thrilled to welcome you to our Summer 2024 Math Class. Whether you are returning to math after a long break or looking to get ahead, this course is designed to give you the tools you need to succeed. Since this is a summer term, we will be moving at a brisk pace, so it is vital to hit the ground running on Day 1.

Your "Getting Started" Checklist

To ensure a smooth start to the semester, please prioritize the following steps immediately:

  • Review the Syllabus: This is your roadmap and contract for the course. It contains the grading scale, schedule, and expectations.
  • Set up Hawkes Learning: We will be using Hawkes Learning for our homework and exams. If you run into technical issues, please use the 24/7 chat support linked below.
  • Download the Class Notes: I have provided guided notes for Chapters 1 and 2. I highly recommend printing these out and filling them in as you watch the video lectures.

A Look Ahead: Chapters 1 and 2

We are diving straight into the foundations of algebra. In Chapter 1, we will review the Real Number System and Set Theory. You will learn to identify different sets of numbers, such as natural numbers ($ \mathbb{N} $) and real numbers ($ \mathbb{R} $), and perform operations on sets using union ($ A \cup B $) and intersection ($ A \cap B $).

In Chapter 2, we transition to solving linear equations and inequalities. Mastery of the slope-intercept form is crucial here:

$$y = mx + b$$

Where $m$ represents the slope and $b$ represents the y-intercept. Understanding how variables relate to one another in this format is the key to graphing lines and solving complex systems later in the course.
