Lesson 3.6

Sector Area

A sector is a “pizza slice” of a circle. If arc length tells you the curved edge, sector area tells you the flat region inside that slice. The formula is just as elegant as the arc length one.

Introduction

Last lesson you computed the length of the curved edge. Now we compute the area of the entire wedge-shaped region bounded by two radii and that arc. The sector area formula is closely related to the arc length formula and, like it, requires the angle to be in radians.

Past Knowledge

The area of a full circle is . Arc length is .

Today's Goal

Calculate the area of a circular sector using .

Future Success

Sector area connects directly to integration in calculus and is used in probability, engineering design, and data visualization.

Key Concepts

Deriving the Formula

A sector is a fraction of the full circle. The fraction of the full rotation covered by angle is . Multiply this fraction by the full circle area:

Sector Area Formula

where = sector area, = radius, = central angle in radians

Step 1: Rearrange the formula to solve for .

Step 2: Substitute.

Final Answer: radians ()

Common Pitfalls

Forgetting the ½

The most common mistake is writing instead of . This doubles the actual area. The is critical!

Confusing Arc Length with Sector Area

Arc length () gives a one-dimensional length. Sector area () gives a two-dimensional area. Notice the area formula has (squared), which is your clue that the result will be in square units.

Real-Life Applications

Pie Charts

Every wedge of a pie chart is a sector. Data visualization libraries calculate the area of each sector using where is proportional to the data percentage. A category representing of data gets an angle of radians.

Irrigation Systems

Center-pivot irrigation systems (those giant circular sprinklers on farms) water a sector-shaped area. Agricultural engineers calculate how many acres of crops will be watered for a given arm length and rotation angle using the sector area formula.
